A woman drags her breath inside
her window. The tide draws
back from shore. Today is borne
toward oblivion remembered.
There is clapping, keeping time,
and the stressed beats of splendor
count as towels against the damp.
All along the street the evening
brightens as it darkens, soft light
withdrawing to the lamps, white trees
camped beyond the houses.
